Bengaluru, May 17, 2025 — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather alerts for Bengaluru and 25 other districts in Karnataka as the southwest monsoon makes an early and vigorous entry into the region. The advancing monsoon is expected to bring moderate to heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds over the next several days, significantly affecting daily life and possibly disrupting events, including today’s high-stakes IPL 2025 match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.
⚠️ Widespread Weather Alerts
According to the IMD, an Orange Alert has been issued for several northern and central districts including Bidar, Kalaburagi, Vijayapura, Yadgir, Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Koppal, Bagalkote, Chitradurga, and Chikkamagaluru. These areas are likely to witness heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms and strong surface winds.
Meanwhile, Yellow Alerts are in place for Bengaluru Urban and Rural, as well as Ballari, Shivamogga, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Hassan, Mysuru, Kodagu, Tumakuru, Ramanagara, Mandya, Chamarajanagar, Kolar, and Chikkaballapur. These regions can expect light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by occasional thunder and wind gusts.
The alerts are effective from May 16 to May 22, and residents are advised to monitor updates closely and take precautions, especially in areas vulnerable to waterlogging and electrical hazards.
🌧️ Bengaluru Weather Update
In Bengaluru, the weather on Saturday evening is cloudy, with a current temperature of 28°C (82°F). Forecasts indicate a 71% chance of rain around 7 PM, right when the toss for the IPL 2025 match is scheduled to take place. A heavy thunderstorm is expected to hit the city during the evening hours, threatening to disrupt or even wash out the game entirely. This has made Bengaluru weather a key concern for cricket fans across the country.
If the match is canceled due to rain, RCB and KKR will split points, which could impact both teams’ standings in the playoff race.
🌀 Monsoon Progress Ahead of Schedule
The IMD has confirmed that the southwest monsoon has made an early onset over the South Bay of Bengal, the South Andaman Sea, and the Nicobar Islands—several days ahead of its usual schedule. This early advancement is expected to intensify rainfall across Karnataka, including both coastal and interior regions. Bengaluru weather is likely to remain unstable with cloudy skies and rain throughout the coming week.
Experts predict intermittent heavy showers and thunderstorms to continue, especially in the evenings. With the onset of the monsoon, Bengaluru weather will see increased humidity, cooler temperatures, and more frequent rain events.
📢 Safety Advisory
Residents are urged to stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid sheltering under trees or near electric poles, and be cautious on slippery roads. Commuters should plan their travel in advance, as traffic disruptions and waterlogging are likely.
