On April 22, 2025, a horrific terrorist attack shattered the peaceful afternoon at Baisaran meadow near Pahalgam, one of Kashmir’s most beloved tourist spots. What was meant to be a scenic getaway turned into a scene of tragedy as gunmen opened fire on a group of unsuspecting visitors. At least 28 lives were lost, and more than 20 others were injured in one of the deadliest civilian attacks in the region in recent memory.
The Attack Unfolds
Witnesses describe a terrifying moment when the attackers—reportedly posing as policemen—emerged from nearby forests and began shooting indiscriminately. The attackers allegedly targeted non-Muslims, asking individuals to recite Islamic verses and even checking for religious identifiers to separate their victims. The violence unfolded in broad daylight, around 2:50 PM, during a peak tourism period when families and individuals were out enjoying the natural beauty of the valley.
The Victims
Among those killed were 24 Indian tourists, two local residents of Jammu and Kashmir, and two foreign nationals—one from Nepal and one from the UAE. Heartbreakingly, the victims included a young Indian Navy officer and a member of the Intelligence Bureau, underscoring the indiscriminate brutality of the assault. Injured survivors were rushed to nearby hospitals, many still battling for their lives.
Nation Mourns, Leaders Respond
The attack sent shockwaves across the country and beyond. Indian leaders quickly returned from international visits to address the crisis and oversee the emergency response. Security was heightened across the region, and a helpline was activated to support affected families. Across the world, leaders voiced their sympathy and support, united in their condemnation of the senseless violence.
A Harsh Reminder of Ongoing Tensions
This attack has deeply scarred the region, marking a grim reminder of the volatile situation in Kashmir. It’s the deadliest attack targeting civilians since the 2019 Pulwama bombing. Though Kashmir has long experienced conflict, tourists had largely been spared in recent years. Now, that fragile sense of safety has been shaken.
Protests erupted across the valley in the aftermath, with citizens expressing both grief and outrage. As investigations continue and the hunt for the attackers intensifies, the region faces renewed calls for stability, justice, and peace.
This moment of sorrow stands as a painful reflection of the urgent need to protect innocent lives and work toward a future free from such devastating acts of violence.
