In a new update, WhatsApp can now be set as your default calling app on iPhones, replacing the regular Phone app. This means you can make voice calls directly through WhatsApp, even to numbers not already in your contact list — as long as the number is linked to a WhatsApp account.
This feature is especially useful in areas with poor mobile signal but good Wi-Fi connectivity, like in remote or mountainous regions. Since WhatsApp uses the internet to make calls, it can work even when your regular network doesn't.
✅ How to Set WhatsApp as Default Calling App on iPhone:
Step 1:
Open the Settings app on your iPhone. Make sure your WhatsApp is updated to the latest version (25.10.72 or later).
Step 2:
Go to Apps > Default Apps in the settings menu.
Step 3:
Tap on Calling, and then select WhatsApp. You’ll see a confirmation message that WhatsApp will now be used to make calls by default.
That’s it! Once you’ve done this, any call you make (if the number is linked to WhatsApp) will go through the app instead of the regular Phone app.
🔔 Note: This feature only works on iPhones running iOS 18.2 or later. Also, you can switch back to the regular Phone app anytime if needed.
🤔 Why Use WhatsApp for Calls?
If you’re in a place with no network signal but Wi-Fi is available, WhatsApp can still connect your calls. This makes it a handy option for travelers, remote workers, or anyone living in low-signal areas.
